- Net metering documents fall into four groups: KYC, ownership, technical, and DISCOM forms.
- Core papers: PAN/Aadhaar, latest bill, ownership proof, SLD, inverter datasheet.
- A rented roof needs a no-objection certificate from the owner.
- The list is similar nationally but each DISCOM adds its own forms and formats.
- The top reject cause is a name or sanctioned-load mismatch — match everything before you submit.
A net metering application is only as fast as its weakest document. One expired licence, one name mismatch, or one missing drawing, and the whole file waits. This net metering documents checklist gives EPCs the full set, grouped and explained, so the file goes in clean the first time.
Why the document set matters so much
The DISCOM checks your documents before it studies feasibility. If anything is missing or wrong, the file is sent back before the technical review even starts. That round trip can cost a week or more. Getting the document set right is the single cheapest way to speed up the net metering process.
The required documents for net metering split into four groups: who the consumer is (KYC), who owns the site (ownership), what you are building (technical), and the DISCOM's own paperwork (forms). The full checklist below covers all four.
The full net metering documents checklist
Use this as your master list. Tick each item before you open the application. Items marked "where required" depend on the DISCOM and the project.
- ✓ Consumer ID proof PAN and/or Aadhaar of the connection holder
- ✓ Latest electricity bill Shows the consumer number and sanctioned load
- ✓ Passport photo Of the applicant, where the DISCOM asks
- ✓ Proof of ownership Property tax receipt, sale deed or registry
- ✓ No-objection / tenancy NOC from owner if the roof is rented or leased
- ✓ Site photographs Roof and meter board, geotagged where required
- ✓ Single-line diagram (SLD) Signed layout of the solar and metering circuit
- ✓ Inverter datasheet CEA-compliant with anti-islanding protection
- ✓ Module / panel details Make, model and rating; ALMM where required
- ✓ Earthing & protection plan Earthing, isolators and safety devices
- ✓ Net metering application form The DISCOM or portal application
- ✓ Self-certification / undertaking Declaration of standards and load
- ✓ Load enhancement papers Only if the system exceeds sanctioned load

KYC and ownership documents
The KYC group proves who holds the connection. The core items are the PAN and/or Aadhaar of the connection holder and the latest electricity bill. The bill matters twice: it carries the consumer number you apply against and it shows the sanctioned load that caps your system size.
Ownership and the rented roof
Ownership proof is usually a property tax receipt, sale deed or registry entry. If the roof is rented or leased, the DISCOM also needs a no-objection certificate from the owner. We cover the full landlord-tenant case in our rented rooftop guide. Make sure the applicant name matches across the bill, the PAN and the ownership proof — a mismatch here is the most common reason a file stalls.
Technical documents
The technical group describes the plant you will build. The DISCOM uses it to check the design is safe and standards-compliant before it grants feasibility.
The single-line diagram (SLD)
The single-line diagram is the most important technical document. It is a signed drawing that shows how the panels, inverter, protection and meter connect to the grid. A clear, correct SLD speeds both feasibility and the joint inspection. Our SLD guide shows how to prepare one that passes.
Inverter, modules and protection
You also submit the inverter datasheet, module details, and the earthing and protection plan. The inverter must meet CEA standards with anti-islanding protection — see our inverter standards guide. Where the scheme requires it, modules must also meet ALMM rules. Confirm the current technical requirements with your DISCOM, as they are amended from time to time.
DISCOM forms and undertakings
The last group is the DISCOM's own paperwork: the net metering application form, a self-certification or undertaking on standards and load, and load-enhancement papers if the system exceeds the sanctioned load. The form is usually on the DISCOM portal or the National Portal.
If your design is bigger than the customer's sanctioned load, you must apply for a load enhancement first or resize the system. The DISCOM will not approve a system that exceeds the sanctioned load.
Why the checklist varies per DISCOM
The core list is similar across India, but each DISCOM adds its own twist. Some require geotagged photos. Some have a fixed SLD template. Some want a specific undertaking format. A document that passes in one state can be sent back in another for the wrong format alone.
Always check the live list on the DISCOM portal before you apply. Our state pages carry the DISCOM-specific document notes — for example UPPCL/UPNEDA in Uttar Pradesh, TANGEDCO in Tamil Nadu and BESCOM in Karnataka. When in doubt, verify the current document set with the DISCOM.
Common document mistakes that stall a file
Most rejections at the document stage are avoidable. Watch for these.
- Name mismatch across the bill, PAN and ownership proof — make the name identical everywhere.
- System above sanctioned load — resize or apply for a load enhancement first.
- Expired documents — a lapsed licence or old bill is sent back; use current copies.
- Wrong SLD format — use the DISCOM's template where one exists.
- Missing NOC — a rented roof without an owner's no-objection certificate stalls.
If your file is rejected at feasibility for a deeper reason, our feasibility rejection guide walks the fixes.
How SuryaHub helps you keep documents ready
Chasing documents across jobs and DISCOMs is where time leaks. SuryaHub keeps a per-DISCOM checklist and a document vault for every job, so the right files are gathered before you apply and nothing expires unnoticed. The net metering steps then run inside government workflows, and your field team uploads site photos from the mobile field app. SuryaHub is pre-revenue; the only real pilots are Suryantra Energy and RGESPL, and the document rules here are scheme facts, not guarantees.

Frequently asked questions
What documents are required for net metering in India?+
Net metering documents fall into four groups: KYC such as PAN, Aadhaar and the latest electricity bill; ownership proof and a NOC if the roof is rented; technical papers like the single-line diagram and inverter datasheet; and the DISCOM application form. The exact list varies by DISCOM, so verify the current set with yours.
Is the net metering document list the same for every DISCOM?+
No. The core net metering document list is similar across India, but each DISCOM adds its own forms, undertakings and formats. Some need geotagged photos or a specific SLD template. Always check the current list on your DISCOM portal before you apply, because a wrong format is a common reason a file is sent back.
What is a single-line diagram and why is it needed?+
A single-line diagram, or SLD, is a signed drawing that shows how the solar system, inverter, protection and meter connect to the grid. The DISCOM needs the SLD to check the design is safe and matches standards. A clear, correct SLD speeds feasibility and the joint inspection, so prepare it carefully.
Do I need extra documents if the roof is rented?+
Yes. If the roof is rented or leased, the DISCOM usually needs a no-objection certificate or consent from the property owner alongside the tenancy proof. This protects the owner and the consumer of record. The exact wording differs by DISCOM, so confirm the format with yours before you apply.
What is the most common document mistake in net metering?+
The most common net metering document mistake is a name or load mismatch — the applicant name differs across the bill, PAN and ownership proof, or the system size exceeds the sanctioned load. Both stall the application. Match the name everywhere and check the sanctioned load before you submit the file.
How does SuryaHub help with net metering documents?+
SuryaHub stores a per-DISCOM document checklist and a document vault for each job, so the right files are ready before you apply and nothing expires unnoticed. SuryaHub is pre-revenue; the only real pilots are Suryantra Energy and RGESPL.
